When summer passes and northern Newfoundland is engulfed in a heavy blanket of snow, new outdoor experiences begin at Tuckamore. We offer cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobile excursions...but we are most proud of our award-winning Vakkar (beautiful) Viking Journey! This package was given the Canadian Tourism Commission's Award of Excellence.
The journey begins after our 'Head Viking', dressed in authentic winter garb, brings Komu Blesseth, or greetings. After a night of Viking revelry, our guests snowmobile to L'Anse aux Meadows and return the following day, a 120-mile trip that traverses a land as beautiful and pristine as it was when the Vikings arrived almost 1,000 years ago. Guests travel to ghost towns in Hare Bay, along the Long Range Mountains and onwards to Gros Morne. One has the opportunity to view basking seals or even a polar bear while enjoying the thrill of riding on Arctic ice.
Guests visit the site where Dr. Wilfred Grenfell, of the now world-famous Grenfell Mission, nearly met a tragic end on the sea ice while en route to save a young boy's life. One can hear the story of how Dr. Grenfell sacrificed the lives of his favorite sled dogs to save his own and of the heroic men who risked their lives to save Dr. Grenfell's. After a day blazing trails and exploring the vastness of our region, we relax around a glowing fireplace and learn the traditional art of making snowshoes...a keepsake that enhances a wonderful memory.
A journey through the countryside of Northern Newfoundland with our staff at Tuckamore will be one of the best memories that you will ever have.
